Visitor from India.jpg

Bethany recently welcomed a visitor from Bangalore, India.  Padma Srinivasan, a family member of Padma Srinivasa, library assistant, visited the school and amazed the kindergartners with her ability to make crocheted animals.  Mrs. Srinivasan is planning to make an ark full of animals for the school.

Spring has definitely arrived at Bethany School!  These students enjoy a walk to their next class and the blooming flowers and trees along the way.

Labyrinth.jpg

Students recently had the opportunity to walk a labyrinth.  They learned that the labyrinth has been a meditation and prayer tool for centuries.  Some students concentrated on words such as "peace" or "harmony".

Penguin Day.jpg

A colony of penguins was recently spotted at Bethany!  The kindergartners completed a study of penguins with Penguin Day.  They dressed like penguins, ate black and white food, played penguin games, and sang penguin songs.

Big Tree Plantation.jpg

Our kindergartners visited Big Tree Plantation in Morrow. They learned that real trees are better for the environment, since they can be chipped and used for mulch, while discarded artificial trees will be in the landfill forever.  The tree farmer also told the children that two trees are planted for every one they cut down.  Each child went home with a tiny tree to plant.

Thanksgiving.jpg

It was Plymouth Rock, 1621 all over again when kindergarteners at Bethany School celebrated Thanksgiving. Half the children dressed as pilgrims and half dressed as Native Americans and they sat down together and enjoyed such things as turkey, popcorn, cheese, fry bread, and apples.

Andrea Cheng.jpg

Bethany School's Lunch in the Library group recently read Marika, the story of a Jewish girl growing up in Budapest during WWII.  After the students finished the book, the book's author Andrea Cheng, and her mother, Mary Kartal who is the subject of the book, visited the school to discuss Marika.  First the students and visitors enjoyed a lunch of Hungarian foods, then saw a presentation with pictures of people and places mentioned in the book.  This is the fifth year that Bethany has given 7th grade students this incredible opportunity to discuss the book with the author, and to speak to someone who was arrested by Nazis and forced to hide for the last few months of the war.  Shown here in this picture, Andrea Cheng signs a book for a student.

Model UN.jpg

Bethany was invited to send two groups of 7th and 8th graders to participate in the Mount Notre Dame Model United Nations for the second year.  This is a simulation that helps students understand topics and procedures which delegates follow in order to work toward international peace, security, and cooperation.

Our Bethany students represented the nations of Mexico and Spain.  Points were earned for their countries by staying in character and following United Nations guidelines.  The students representing Mexico garnered Outstanding Delegation, one student received an Honorable Mention for Outstanding Delegate, and two other students were named Outstanding Delegates.

First grade noisemakers.jpg

In a surprising turn of events, Bethany School first graders were actually encouraged to make some noise!  The students studied sound in science class and learned how sound is made when objects vibrate and how to make loud and soft and high and low sounds.  For homework they had to make an instrument using found objects from around the house.

dia del La Raza.jpg

Bethany Spanish students don't just learn the language - they also learn the culture!  These 8th grade students prepared a song in Spanish to sing to the other classes in commemoration of Dia del La Raza, or Columbus Day.  This day is celebrated in Hispanic culture to remember colonization, explration, and the multicultural heritage of the United States.
