Upper School

The Upper School, comprised of grades 7 and 8, emphasizes a program dedicated to academic excellence.  An environment that is both academically stimulating and challenging is provided, thus giving the child an appreciation for intellectual endeavors. Realizing that each child can best achieve his or her potential within an academic program attuned to his or her individual needs, small classes and flexible scheduling are offered. Within this academic setting, we also strive to foster a sense of self-discipline in regard to study and work habits. Character development is encouraged, such that each child will acquire a positive self-image and the ability to work well with others in a diverse community of people.

Instructional groups for seventh and eighth graders are no larger than fifteen students. In preparation for high school, students change classes for every subject in their eight-period day. Language arts stresses the mastery of comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, listening, and an added emphasis on writing. In mathematics, students take pre-algebra at the seventh grade level and algebra in eighth grade.  Laboratory experience in science is offered through a life science program in seventh grade and through Introductory Physical Science in eighth grade. Upper School social studies includes world geography and American History. Academic Spanish is offered at this level. For two periods per week, the seventh and eighth grade students are offered "flex" time. In these two 45 minute periods, students can choose from subjects such as bridge, yoga, Thai studies, drawing, survival skills, or decorative painting. Music, physical education, art, computer, Christian Education, and library classes round out the upper school week.

The mission of Bethany's Upper School is to promote individual growth and readiness for high school.  We are encouraged by these testimonials by administrators from area high schools:
