Power of the Pen is a unique opportunity for talented Ohio student writers to stretch their skills and creativity outside of the classroom. Through weekly practice, mini-lessons, and group discussion, students work to increase their knowledge of themselves as writers. Writing teachers act as coaches.
Two separate teams are formed from seventh and eighth grade students; each team is limited to six members with two alternates. Participation requires an initial writing exercise, commitment to weekly attendance at practices, and commitment to three contests during the year.
Along with the opportunity to embrace writing as a challenge
and competitive activity, students share in exposure to great writers such as Stephanie Tolan and Chris Crutcher when they qualify for the State Finals. For years, Bethany School has been proud to have students qualify to participate in the State Finals at the College of Wooster.
*"Power of the Pen inspires a love for the beauty and power of language for writing as a life skill. It encourages creative and critical thinking, and enriches and enhances the writing curriculum of the school."
